About Better Aging Wellness & Positive Aging Class
Better Aging Wellness adheres to ‘Positive Aging’, a perspective on aging that fosters a more positive mindset and approach regardless of the challenges that old age inevitably presents. Older people often indicate that they feel "invisible" and unappreciated. In a society that reveres youth and ridicules aging it is human nature to assume aging leads only to failing capabilities and losses.
Too many seniors overlook the upside and benefits of aging, when older adults accept the negative it often results in feelings of diminished self-worth and depressive symptoms. These and other negative emotions reduce quality of life, well-being, and longevity.
A study conducted by researchers at Harvard, Yale, and Miami (Ohio) universities found that those who had positive perceptions of aging lived an average of 7.5 years longer than those with cloudier outlooks, this reinforces the importance of helping people achieve a more positive attitude about aging.
Moreover recent studies have shown that factors other than physical health seemed to contribute significantly to personal successes in aging. These factors were psychological such as meaningfulness, worthwhileness, optimism, and a sense of resilience. In a sense, positive aging is as much a state of mind as it is any specific physical or mental condition. The essence of what it means to be happy and healthy in old age is to discipline yourself to reframe perceptions and cultivate positive emotions as you cope with the dilemmas of aging.
The most common theme encountered in aging is loss, inevitably over the years as we continue to age particularly in advanced age we lose many things. During our latter mid-life and senior years we suffer multiple losses of spouses, friends, relatives, identity roles, functions, mobility, range of motion and independence, which may occur alongside fear of anticipated future losses that often leaves us troubled with anxiety, depression, guilt, grief, and regret.
If we are going to enter our later chapters of life with clear vision and vital energy, it is important that we review our lives up to now to see what will serve us moving forward, and to heal our past so we aren’t encumbered by old baggage on the journey ahead. For many of us, regret is a crucial dynamic that calls to be healed. Forgiveness of others and ourselves is critical too.
